GRAVIL – Enemy Within (Official Music Video)

This song is filled with apparatus. It’s packed to the gunwales with machinery. It’s stuffed with devices. But with all that industrial detritus strewn about the place – you would think it may be disconnected and confused.. But have no fear. This is as fulfilling and complete as you can imagine. It holds together like a bridge. It connects into intricate knots like well-worn chain-mail. Grant’s main vocal is extraordinary and burning – it seems to paste the main structures of the songs together – like bronze clasps on a belt-fed bandolier.

But it’s those yawning – gaping – guitars at around the 2:50 mark that will really affect you. They are strong, powerful and majestic in both beauty and horror!

Tree House Fire Debut Album Review

Those loveable Guildford based reggae/ska /pop fellas Tree House Fire have proudly produced an amazing debut album – available right now on Trench Foot Records.

The recording entitled Rocket! can be grabbed at their bandcamp site or using the links below.

After the band’s sensational show at The Hobgoblin, Staines at the weekend (Ant’s Birthday bash) – we got hold of a copy of Rocket! And here’s what we thought:

With a whirlwind of a start to it, this song pumps you up from the inside and it makes you grind. The first tiny taster-track grooves smoothly into the superb composition ‘Straza Grip’. With its boom-boom political references and a bass line that walks impulsively along-the-line. This accomplished song has more fire in its belly than a dragon that’s been force-fed a vindaloo. ‘No more prophets to spread the world …’ Sings Sam (vocals / guitar) as those sinewy organ sounds swelter out. This track simmers and bubbles beneath the Levantine sun. ‘The Drop’ pulls no political punches either. But that won’t stop you dancing. The vibrations will shake your chitterlings – causing some sonic damage deep down in your Mondongos

And then ‘Rabble’ flames up a joint of soothing sounds, so you can start to relax and unwind into some early shimmying, ready for ‘Peoples Problems’. This enjoyable ditty has lumpy low notes – and these get pulled and prodded around by the band’s miracle bass player – Ant. The cool voice runs along, growing in stature as it matures within the song. And then, before you know it, it’s all over. It’s a bit like a night out with your mates really!

Title track ‘Rocket!’ has a traditional Reggae/Ska edge to it. Effective vocals create several notable moments, and the song-structure will certainly make you raise your arms and sway. A memorable chorus will linger for ever, too.

Scratchy ‘Great Ocean Road’ (Featuring DJ Killer Tomato) is a fast paced squawking scatter-gun of surprises. An addictive beat is gilded by those intrepid vocals that chatter out an alarming rate.

The track ‘Stack It Up High’ is the creation “par excellence” of Tree House Fire. A firm favourite at live shows, the bass play in this extraordinary piece is so utterly depraved that it almost consumes you.

And ‘KMB ’ is the band’s party song. It’s happy reggae. It has a whooping sing along chorus and oodles of plucky guitar sounds that keep moving behind an enormously bouncy bass and cheerfully inflatable vocals. It’s the kind of the song that you need to take your heels off for. Sod it, take off your shirt too. ‘Cos you will be dancin’ along to this one. For ages. I promise you. In fact, you will be “bouncing off the ceiling ..” after listening to it.

Boomtown Choice

Now in its fourth year the festival will offer an array of music, theatre, comedy and art. BoomTown Fair is a music, arts and family festival that takes place at Matterley Bowl, nr. Winchester, Hampshire, from Thursday 9th until Sunday 12th August 2012.

With 30 Stages and 15 venues, the choice of where to go and what to see  is deliciously exhausting !   So we have come up with 12 Artists you should not miss  … add these to your weekend ‘check list’ …
Dub Pistols
The Town Centre Stage
Try this FREE download of summer vibes Rompa’s Reggae Shack – Dub Pistols Mix by @RompaUrbanNerds via #soundcloud to get an idea of why you should not miss this band.
Moonshine and waves of silk start this song going – light drums glisten the surface before a huge bass wallows into view. This bassline sets up the gleaming reggae – for all it’s worth. Rude yet civilized vocals limp around. And they add piquancy and flavor when they are most needed. You won’t be able to stop your shimmy to the vibrating beat though – it’s so shakable. Tense yourself. And wait for release.     Link:  http://www.facebook.com/dub.pistols
First Degree Burns
Oldtown Theatre

Born out of a city that often echoes the bassy hypnotic sounds of Dub influenced music come ‘First Degree Burns’ or more simply known FDB. Having coined the term ‘Skip-Hop’ to sum up their unique blend of genres,  FDB have held onto their roots, developing their unique sound into their impressive 8-piece band and creating a seamless fusion of Ska, Reggae, Hip-Hop and Rock. With a trunk load of new material being finely tuned in their Bristol studio and various videos projects due to launch this year, FDB are set to turn even more heads in 2012.

‘Hip Hop Why’ – has an enormous expanse – almost a hollywood movie in intent and ambition. The horns bump, gleam and intrude. The vocals and lyrics are timeless and splendid. Rappy at times, they also hold on tight to their vintage heritage. The percussion sparkles and the whole piece dances along- shoving slow-coaches out of the way to get to the centre of the dance-floor. Stupendous.

And ‘Narcissus’ has some gorgeous steelpan harmonies and then a twisting horny instrumental, that comes in like a python on the kill, and  soon takes over. The place turns into a fiery wreck, as things speed up to a break-neck assault. The vocalist manages to hang on, but has to spatter out vocals as fast as a scatter gun. A lesson in shaking and vibrating.

BaByHeAd
The Town Centre Stage

Born out of love for Jamaican sound clash, forged through a do it yourself punk rock ethic and delivered with a raw hip hop swagger, the unstoppable BaByHeAd sound is drawn from all quarters of the musical universe, in true Bristol fashion. They have been a live phenomenon in the clubs and on the festival circuit, for a decade plus, rocking stages from Glastonbury to Fabric and Keith Allen once called them the “bastard child of Ian Dury and Iggy pop” while the legendary Toots Hibbert has, himself, tipped the band.Rapid-fire vocals illuminate the bruising fleshy sounds that are stout in girth and all encompassing in ambition. Every now and then, things get glued down, and then things can become hot, anarchic and raunchy. This is when trumpets flare and the audience skanks.  Come alive to BaByHeAd !

The Empress of Fur
The Devil Kicks Dancehall
This freaky fur-piece voodoo billy outfit from Fenland farming country look like the bastard offspring of an unholy four-way bunk up between Bettie Page, Zorro, Uncle Fester and Mr Macphisto.
They sound like the equally unwanted children of the Cramps, Link Wray, Nancy Sinatra and the Rezillos. And they just wanna be loved…
So, so sexy, melodramatic and twangy.
Check ‘em out at the Dirty Water Club here: http://youtu.be/y3ZlR560dBM
The Go Go Cult
The Devil Kicks Dancehall
From a heavily armed farmhouse in the swamplands of Reading the Go Go Cult play crazy & surreal 50’s Psychedelic Punk. It’s like crossing Johnny Cash with The Clash (perhaps Johnny Clash) and seeing what happens.
The chemical mix is explosive.
And it will shake your pants.

Pussycat and the Dirty Johnsons
The Devil Kicks Dancehall
Basingstoke rock ‘n’ rollers Pussycat and the Dirty Johnsons have all the twang necessary to shake your quiff and get those winkle-pickers a-popping. Toyah-sounding vocals leer and veer about, as the crunchy rock beats glisten and glitter.

It’s always time to party with the Pussycat!

Lady Chann
The Lion’s Den
Billed as the U.K’s number one dance-hall queen… When this lady steps on stage it is an explosion of vibes and energy. Combine that with her magnetic good looks and huge collaborations with names such as Toddla T, The Heatwave and UK star Sticky, this girl is not to be missed!
‘Sticky Situation’ – is a confluence of icky glutinous vocal sounds creating a breezy intro – then the muscular reggae gets stuck in,  to root out what’s what. But the ‘sticky situation’ chorus is like a sail seen on the horizon. It can be seen, but never reached. This song gloops, it wallows and finally it delights the listener.
Check out ‘Sticky Situation’ here:  http://youtu.be/bUobXtV3Vfo
Stush
The Lion’s Den

Reggae influenced Recording artist Stush is signed to Island records and known for UK top ten single ‘Get Down’ alongside Groove Armada.   Currently Stush is recording new material, and has recently launched her ‘already popular’ jewellery line Stushlery.

Honeyfeet
The Wandering Word

Put simply, Honeyfeet are Manchester’s best ethno-trad, barrel-house pop, cowpunk folk-hop band. It’s as easy as that to categorise them! Honeyfeet have already garnered a magnificent reputation as one of the best live acts in Manchester, down – in no small part –  to the vocal prowess of front-woman Ríoghnach Connolly, assisted by a tight rhythm section and a hefty bank of horns.

Honeyfeet will be releasing their debut EP “Little Boat” on Debt Records in the summer of 2012.

‘Knocking on Another Man’s Door’ is a soft elegy, preposterously shaky – and about to collapse in a faint at any given moment. The accommodating blues sounds tend to hold things up a little, but this shaky confection is just too fragile, it cannot stand on it’s own two legs. Calamity awaits.

‘You Let Me Down’ is smoky and jazzy. The clarinet twines around the Blue Café, lingering a while on the empty tables, before meeting with the claggy air outside. The voice is livid. You will feel terribly sad. The drip-drip of unwanted rain in your life will shock you. Yes, you will have been let me down, lover. But the lingering taste of rich jazz will captivate the soul.

The Infinite Collective
The Hanging Gardens

The Ska/funk/electro outfit The Infinite Collective from Plymouth just buzz and purr. This group of like minded musicians, encompassing many styles and backgrounds, aim to come together and partake in nights of fun and creativity.

They’ve had many successful times at festivals and running nights in gig venues across the southwest… and now they have been let loose at Boomtown!

They are as greasy as a grey seal on a slimy rock. But as potent as a red rutting rooster on the strut.
Link:
The Meow Meows
The Hanging Gardens

The Meow Meows are a legendary eight piece traditional Ska ‘n’ Roll supergroup from Brighton, UK. with vocals from Danny and Hanna and a whole pile of juicy sounds from saxophone, trumpet and guitars.

Their unique sound is something of an amalgamation of 60s garage rock ‘n’ roll, 80’s 2 tone ska and anything else they may feel like chucking in. They formed back in summer 2005 mainly as an excuse to drink on a week-night, but since then they have played with major international acts including The Beat, King Blues, Bad Manners, The Slackers, and The Aggrolites.

Song ‘Bad Man’ is refreshingly bright with stashes of breezy chords and an upbeat attitude. A profusion of drums is the precursor to those flamboyant Meow Meow horns – and then you realise that this is a ‘Twist’ – so get twistin’ sister!  Absolutely superb!

Link:
Keltrix
The Hanging Gardens

Say it with a song… and why not indeed especially when you have a lot to say and a voice strong enough to ensure that you are heard!  Keltrix is a varied beast, grooving it up one minute with freak folk foot stomping crowd pleaser’s before sliding into ambient acoustic moments then rousing it up all over again with hints of ska, rock disco and dubfunk. An eclectic mix but one that appears to work…

Keltrix are led, most fearlessly into battle by Keri. Better known as ‘Scouse’ for obvious reasons after a few ciders, Keri’s fiery, temperament is just as apparent in her voice as it is in her general demeanour, though she and the rest of the band are really quite nice when you get to know them.

With a flourish of Spanish guitar and some wavering strings ‘Different But The Same’ starts. Keri’s vocals may remind you of Grace Slick crossed with Sandy Denny. Seeping enough to shiver your timbers, but protesting and hard faced when the nuances need it. This is a spiky song – as spiny as the holly that is lyrically painted- the pain and aggravation is hardly hidden. But the quality is like a highly polished piece of furniture. It even smells rich and waxy!

Boomtown is Bombertown

The Skints – Playing Boomtown Fair 2012

Bomber Music is a truly independent music company.

Since 2002 Bomber Music has been the UK’s leading alternative music publisher – working closely with the best bands from the underground scene. In 2010 they created their own label to help bands release albums, and give them some of the support that they needed. The label is distributed by Code7/PHD in the UK and by Broken Silence in Europe. Their digital distributor worldwide is Believe.

Bomber Music has announced that they have seven, that’s right, seven, bands playing at this year’s sell out Boomtown Fair!

Boomtown is a completely independent 4 day festival with absolutely no sponsorship or backing. It was simply created out of love for fun – and now with over 30 mad ridiculous stages – it has quickly become one of the craziest cities on the planet (Planet X, since you ask.)

This year’s Boomtown schedule includes everyone’s favourite ska band – The Skints plus appearances from those ska/punk bandits ‘Random Hand’, along with those loveable punk ruffians ‘Smokey Bastard’, and the dangerous rockabilly hucksters the ‘Graveyard Johnnys’.

The rocksteady – reggae masters ‘New Town Kings’ will also be there. As will newer Bomber Music signings ‘Jaya The Cat’ and ‘Anti-Vigilante’.

So that’s it … now that is what we call a good line-up!

Missing Andy Stirs Up The Koko

Missing Andy is a five piece indie rock act from Essex. They are riding high right now, after performing at the famous SXSW festival alongside The Wombats, The Pigeon Detectives and Lightspeed Champion, amongst others. The band has also been asked to be part of a soundtrack for ‘Chain Letter’ a Hollywood film ( featuring Nikki Read of ‘Twilight’ fame.) They are playing this year Redfest on Sunday, July 22 – along with Foreign Beggars.

The driving rhythms and dirty dance beats of Jamaican ska mixed with powerful beat music has always been a tremendous lure for any true London (or Essex) based band. Social historians often overlook the fact that the mod scene was originally concentrated on the all-night dance clubs … it was not all about violence as cool-dressed scooter-boys set about kickin’ ‘the f *** out of rockers on Brighton beach. In the true sense of Mod, Missing Andy are legitimate heroes of the working class. They are workers, thinker and players. Their kind of pop rock is designed to be as tasty and as fresh as possible. They are the legitimate successors of the original mod bands like The Small Faces.

It may have been a twisty, inglorious route to the top table of pop for these mod-class heroes. Getting to the finals of a talent show ( Sky1’s ‘Must Be The Music’) alongside an eleven year old schoolgirl harpist, was an inelegant way to promote their careers, but at least the experience provided the essential skills that the band needed to survive and to grow. Being chucked out of a concert, (after swearing on stage in front of an audience of 8,000 children in a scouting ‘Jamboree’ near Frinton-on-Sea in 2008,) was also awkward, but at least it generated a lot of media attention for the band.

But the boys have now settled into a regular routine of recording, writing and performing … and they are working hard on new material which they have promised their many fans will be a treat for the ears. We were lucky enough to see the band perform in concert at the CLUB NME VS REDFEST gig at KOKO in London.

On stage the band plays chiming jams, rigorously stuffed with generous layers of plush arrangements and an intense party of lively sounds. Their powerful vocals amaze the crowds. Songs such as DAVE (about dirty Suzanna, who has trouble with grammar) is a ska / pop treasure. Those Chas n ‘Dave riffs chug along bravely, while tufts of honky-tonk piano (by Jonathan “Jon” Sharpe on keyboards) clink away merrily in the corner. At KOKO this song was stuffed with Benny Hill style gags, the language was the tongue-in-cheek kind of humour that we all adore… along with the kind of madcap stupidity you might associate with “Madness”. The villains of the peace were cheerful and cheeky in that nudge-nudge naughty English style. The bouncing beat of this superb little ditty had us all moving.

When this band plays, you can not help but think that even Braintree seems exotic… And in songs like “Money” the drums ratatatting ( from Elliot Richards on percussion), sound just like guns firing on the mean streets- perhaps evoking images of a hot night in Spanish Town. Freshly squeezed notes, and a fanfaring upbeat chorus is just the kind of thing you might find in a nightbar alongside a shanty-town in Rio. The masculine voice of lead singer Alex Greaves resonates, but it is highly evolved. Songs like this tend to drill more and more deeply in the skull every time you hear them. Blazing and beautiful.

We were really moved by “The Way We’re Made (Made In England)”, which is the strongest of the band’s many anthems. The text of this hymn invited us to cut the crap and get on with our lives. The lyrics and the beat were fairly predictable – reminding us of “Stan” (Eminem) . But we all smiled at the many clever allusions and concepts scattered along the road. It was a piece of extremely powerful pop, and is still rightly regarded by many fans as the band’s masterpiece.

‘Alive’ is the most Jammy fruit of all of the Missing Andy’s output. Frizzy, fuzzy and fizzy – This is powerpop slammed out without even a pause for air.Venting anger in a song is what this is all about. But those ‘Oh Oh Oh’ choruses and a dancing punk rhythm gives this piece an elegant touch, making the audience just wanna get up and dance some more. This is like a protest song, with pom-poms. Bloody marvellous!

The England that ‘Missing Andy’ creates on stage is a very real England. The images are soggy, disappointing and gray. People are tired and always complaining. The roads are dangerous and dirty. And everything is changing. We feel cheated. We feel insecure. And we feel afraid of the what will come.

But each Missing Andy song has a future in it. And there are always smiles with friends to enjoy. Good times can always be found – even if they are still some way off- beyond the corner. We will not be ground down. The music will keep us healthy and safe. And if we have a little luck, we might even be able to scrape ourselves together a makeshift living along the way …

Missing Andy gave us all a little hope.

Toots and the Maytals to Play UK Beacons Festival

Beacons Festival have just announced that Toots and the Maytals are confirmed as Sunday’s headliner on the Stool Pigeon stage.

Toots and the Maytals, originally called simply The Maytals, are considered legends of ska and reggae music. Their sound is a unique, original combination of gospel, ska, soul, reggae and rock.

Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, the leader of the group, was born in May Pen in the Parish of Clarendon, Jamaica. He was the youngest of seven children. He grew up singing gospel music in a church choir, but moved to Kingston in 1961 at the tender age of sixteen.

Toots and the Maytals remains a relevant influence on today’s global music scene with artists from Amy Winehouse to Sublime re-recording classic tracks.

Toots recieved another Grammy nomination for his 2008 release “Light Your Light”. In recent years Toots has toured with The Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews, Sheryl Crow and Los Lonely Boys.

Toots isn’t just about nostalgia, though; he continues to record and release new music, bringing sunshine everywhere he performs.

On the newest recording ‘Flip & Twist’ he delves into those early influences, creating a record that’s as much 1960s Detroit or Muscle Shoals as it is Kingston, Jamaica.

The Beacons Festival
17th – 19th August 2012
Funkirk Estate, Skipton, The Stunning Yorkshire Dales

Toots and the Maytals will be joining the current line-up below:

New Town Kings – New Video

The 9-piece ska band from Colchester, Essex (UK) – the NEW TOWN KINGS – have released their second studio album entitled ‘Music of Jamaican Origin’ (M.O.J.O.) with an official video for ‘News Stand’ available to see now!

The video takes a candid look at the media’s perception of popular culture and has been chosen by the band to reflect the strength of tabloid media over the nation. Chris Watts of the band explains the motives behind the video, “News Stand is about the media not telling the full truth, we are basically saying you should look at things from all angles to get the full picture”.

‘News Stand’ is a ska-treat. With pliant elbow-flapping and neck-jerking rhythms, along with those smooth honey coloured vocals we have come to expect from the band. These are coupled with a feathery light and unhurried percussion. The fast-yapping hipster in the trilby is ska-reverend and New Town singer Chris Watts. The wise-man fronts up the shockingly tight band brimming with wobbling, foaming bright n’ juicy horns, and jerking lurching guitars, all whipped up into a viscous pith.

With an upcoming tour with the ‘Slackers’ in April, plus appearances at this year’s Boomtown Festival, Mighty Sounds in Czech Republic and separate dates with David Rodigan, Fishbone, plus tons of headline shows in the UK, 2012 is guaranteed to be hectic. Chris told us, “Summer 2012 is going to be big, the band is developing quickly and the feedback at our recent shows has been phenomenal”.

Catch the band on tour in the UK with the ‘Slackers’ in April. If you like trad reggae based ska, but you still like living in the 21st century -then this will be way up your street. Go grab it now!
